There’s a (Slight) Chance I Might Be Going to Hell: A Novel of Sewer Pipes, Pageant Queens, and Big Trouble by Laurie Notaro
Many of the books in my home I have purchased and those I have on Kindle I have started to read, but never finished. I can probably count on my two hands the books I have actually finished.
I am embarrassed to say that when my former teacher neighbor let me borrow her book, it took me over four years to read it. I finally finished it yesterday and I am so glad I did!
The book revolves around a couple, Charlie and Maye, that have to leave the hustle and bustle of Phoenix, AZ to the quiet small town of Spaulding, WA due to a job change for Charlie. Moving to a community where everyone knows everyone is difficult for the main character, Maye. All she wants to do is make friends, but when she tries, it doesn’t work too well for her. So she decides to participate in the annual Sewer Pipe Queen Contest thinking that may help her find friendship.
Laurie’s style of writing is very easy to read. The situations Maye gets into are hilarious and there are a couple of twists at the end of the book. I won’t spoil those for you.
I can somewhat relate to what Maye is going through in her heart. She moves to a new town. She doesn’t know anyone. But she wants to have someone she could meet for coffee or have come over to visit.
Once my husband and I graduated from USD and were starting our lives in Vermillion, it was difficult to meet people. Many of the circles were already formed and it was hard to get into those circles. I knew some of the community members through the jobs that I had. By the time we moved, I had a couple of really good friends that I could depend on, but that was it.
Then we moved out to the Black Hills. I was able to get a job at the middle school right away but was a bit nervous because I never taught that age group before. I also didn’t know anyone. Luckily, I found a friend right away and I didn’t have to do anything embarrassing like Maye to get a friend.
If you want a book that is easy to read, funny, and light, I highly recommend this book. I just wish it didn’t take me so long to finally finish reading it. Thank you my former teacher neighbor for recommending it to me.
Here are links to order the book.
This post made my heart happy. I’m so glad you loved it; I think it’s one of my all-time favorite books. It’s engaging on so many levels.
Your former neighbor really misses you. Retirement is difficult because you’re by yourself all the time, so I’m really looking forward to our upcoming walks. I’m anxious to get back to our chats.
