God's Time, My Life

Giving Up Overcommitment

Day 10 of Lent 2020

We are 1/4 of the way through Lent. How are you doing? Making any changes in your life yet? We are a work in progress and it will take some time. Changes won’t come overnight. It takes patience and persistence to change ourselves for the better.

In our fast-paced world, it is quite easy to become committed to many, many things to fill our day. We wear many hats and it is a struggle to keep them all on.

It is hard for me to say “no”. I don’t want to disappoint anyone or have them think that I cannot help them. I would rather fill my plate and help them out than risk hurting the relationship.

There is a problem with this. If my plate is extremely full and I take on more projects or jobs, I will not be at my best. I won’t be productive and the work I added to my workload will suffer. I also might not have enough time to complete everything.

We have to take care of ourselves and not pile on more than we can handle. Our health suffers from stress and little sleep, our relationships at home suffer because we don’t spend as much time with them as we should, and our jobs will suffer when we take on more than we can handle.

We need to prioritize. Make a list of what is most important and list whether someone else could do it instead.

Lean on God. Pray to Him if you feel overwhelmed and overcommitted. Let Him ease your anxiety and stress through prayer.

Lean on others. Delegate jobs to others whether it is other co-workers, friends, or family members.

When we take the time to prioritize our time and talents, pray to God for guidance, and lean on others when we need them, our lives will be calmer, they will be more enjoyable, and they will be fulfilling.
