Day 5 of Lent 2020
You may be wondering about the title of this one. I did too until I read this chapter in Phil Ressler’s book “40 Things to Give Up for Lent”. We may retire from our careers, but we don’t retire from our purpose in life.
Phil says that work comes in 4 ways:
- Work you detest.
- Work you tolerate.
- Work you enjoy.
- Work you are passionate about.
I am lucky to say that my work as a teacher is something I am passionate about. But I am also passionate about the work that I do as a wife and mother. It is my calling, my vocation, from God to be the best wife and mother to my family.
When my father went in for an annual checkup to his doctor some years ago, his doctor told him, “Don’t quit your day job. It will kill you.” I think my father’s doctor realized that if he ever retired, he needed to have a purpose, a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
We can’t retire from life. So what is your purpose? What is something that would make you get out of bed in the morning? Is it volunteering for a charity? Singing in the church choir? Tutoring students that are struggling? Is it coaching your son’s football team? Something that will make you feel fulfilled at the end of the day.
Tomorrow we will be Giving Up Pleasing People….Oh, boy!
